BRISTOL MANDALA SERIES: Water

28 Mar 2020

Mandala vinyasa is a playful and dynamic practice that traces fluid circles around the mat to the rhythm of the breath. Every class is creatively sequenced to draw you away from the habitual linear patterns of daily life, shifting any stagnant energy whilst opening and strengthening the body in preparation for deeper and more challenging postures. The class begins and closes with guided meditation, pranayama and gentle yin releases to compliment the physical and energetic effects of the flow for a wonderfully well-rounded practice that both challenges and nurtures body and mind.

Some yoga experience is recommended, however different options and modifications will be offered so that there's something for everyone. Each student is encouraged to explore their version of the flow, whilst guided and supported towards new possibilities in their practice. In these special classes, there is time to break down and workshop the most challenging poses and transitions from the asana repertoire with partner work, fun exercises and discussion.

Each workshop in the series will explore a different element: Earth, Water, Fire and Air. The elements each focus on different physical, energetic and emotional aspects of the yoga practice.  You can join us for just one if you fancy but we recommend immersing yourself into the series.

- WATER MANDALA - Tricky Transitions and Hip-openers

The Water Mandala encourages the cultivation of a type of strength that is never hard nor rigid, but fluid, soft and buoyant. The flow calls attention to the moments of transition and breath in-between the poses just as much as the positions themselves, whilst lubricating and releasing into the hips and groin. The class explores what it feels like to go with the flow, to be both powerful and full-of-ease as you play with threading challenging postures together.

- FIRE MANDALA - Twists and Arm Balances

The Fire Mandala cultivates a strong, powerful centre from which and around which the body can expand and spiral through its full freedom of movement. Physically, the class opens and strengthens through the side of the body, and explores all forms of twists: including arm balances. The student is encouraged to take up more space, to explore what it feels like to be radiant, confident and empowered both on and off the mat.

 - EARTH MANDALA - Balances and Inversions

The Earth Mandala cultivates an awareness of and connection to the ground, galvanising that sense of stability, safety and support throughout the flow towards increasingly challenging standing balances and inversions. Physically, the flow opens the hamstrings and back of the body, whilst strengthening the core. The class explores what it feels like to be calm, grounded, safe and supported, especially in the midst of challenge.

- AIR MANDALA - Backbends

The Air Mandala  encourages a safe and supported opening and liberation of the body towards increasingly deep and sweet backbends from seated to standing and even inverted variations. Opening the front of the body, shoulders and quads, whilst strengthening the back of the body, the flow will leave you standing a little taller, breathing a little bigger, and thinking a little more clearly. As you explore opening up beyond habitual forward-facing patterns of movement, this class asks you to become receptive and courageous in the face of new experiences, possibilities and connections.
